The Holy Name Society is one of the social and charitable organizations associated
with parish life at St. Joseph’s in Wurtsboro. Membership is open to all adult men of the parish.
As its name suggests, the original purpose of Holy Name Societies in the United States was to show public reverence for the sacred name of Jesus Christ. Their mission soon expanded to the enhancement of the spiritual welfare of its members and of the parish. Holy Name members also help with fundraising for the Church and to support our own activities and projects. The pastor is encouraged and accustomed to call on the Society for monetary assistance and for volunteer effort on behalf of the parish.
On the Second Sunday of each month, members of the Society gather for Mass, usually at 11 AM, although some men attend the 9 AM Mass whenever that is more convenient to their weekend schedule. They take a place in the Procession at the start of Mass and sit together as a community within the larger community of worshipers.
The Holy Name Society meets on the Monday after the Second Sunday of the month from September through June.
The Society fosters friendship, fellowship and companionship in the journey of spiritual growth which is central to our faith. That bonding is experienced through various on-going assignments and projects of the Society.
